Vicenza, the capital of central Veneto, is the city that, more than any other, bears the name of Andrea Palladio, the architect who in the sixteenth century reinvented the language of classical architecture and influenced Western building for centuries to come, from the United States to Russia. Its historic centre, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Palladian villas of the Veneto, is a tight grid of elegant streets dominated by noble palaces, loggias and hidden courtyards. Piazza dei Signori, the heart of the city, is home to the majestic Basilica Palladiana with its white serliana arches and the slender Torre Bissara; not far away, the Teatro Olimpico preserves Europe's oldest surviving fixed theatre stage set. Corso Palladio runs through the city like an open-air museum, while the surrounding hills hold Villa La Rotonda and Villa Valmarana ai Nani, with its frescoes by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo. Vicenza is also the world capital of goldsmithing, home to the Vicenzaoro trade fair, and the birthplace of baccalà alla vicentina, an emblematic dish of Venetian cuisine. An elegant, measured city, best explored on foot, between art, history and authentic flavours.

The story

The story of Vicenza

The Basilica Palladiana and Piazza dei Signori

Piazza dei Signori has been Vicenza's civic living room since Roman times, but its current appearance bears the signature of Andrea Palladio, who in 1549 was commissioned to clad the existing Palazzo della Ragione with a new loggia in white Piovene stone. This gave rise to the Basilica Palladiana, an absolute masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, recognisable by its double order of serliane (the famous 'Palladian windows', an arch flanked by two rectangular openings) that elegantly resolved the irregularities of the underlying medieval structure. Beside it rises the Torre Bissara, over 82 metres tall, and facing it stand the columns of Saint Mark and the Redeemer, symbols of the city's long period under Venetian rule. Beneath the Basilica's porticoes, markets and cafés have animated the square for centuries.

The Teatro Olimpico

Inaugurated in 1585 with Sophocles' Oedipus the Tyrant, the Teatro Olimpico is Andrea Palladio's last work, completed after his death by Vincenzo Scamozzi, and is the oldest surviving indoor theatre in the world. The building, inspired by theatres of classical antiquity, houses a semicircular wooden and stucco cavea imitating stone, crowned by a balustrade of statues. Yet its most extraordinary feature is the fixed stage set designed by Scamozzi: seven perspective streets in wood and stucco which, exploiting optical illusion, simulate the streets of the city of Thebes, extending into the distance for only a few real metres yet appearing to stretch for tens of metres. Recognised by UNESCO, the theatre still hosts classical performances and concerts today, a unique experience for reliving the magic of Renaissance stagecraft.

Corso Palladio and Its Palaces

Corso Palladio is the main artery of the historic centre, a roughly 800-metre route connecting Piazza Castello to the Corso, which tells, palace after palace, the evolution of the Palladian style and that of his followers. Walking along it, visitors encounter Palazzo Chiericati, home to the Civic Museum and Picture Gallery with works by Tiepolo, Veronese and Van Dyck, and numerous other noble buildings with facades marked by columns, pediments and rusticated stonework. The side streets hide quiet courtyards, baroque churches and craft workshops, while historic cafés offer ideal stops for watching city life go by. Strolling along the Corso, especially at sunset when the stone glows with golden reflections, is the best way to understand why Vicenza is nicknamed 'the city of Palladio'.

Villa La Rotonda

On a hill just outside the centre stands Villa Almerico Capra, universally known as Villa La Rotonda, Andrea Palladio's most famous and imitated work. Designed from 1566 onwards, the villa is distinguished by its perfectly symmetrical plan: a central cubic volume topped by a dome, with four identical porticoes with Ionic columns facing the four cardinal points, each preceded by a flight of steps. This harmonious geometry, blending the classical temple with the noble residence, has inspired buildings around the world, from London's Chiswick House to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello in the United States. A UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the other Palladian villas, La Rotonda is open to visitors and offers one of the most photographed views of the Vicenza countryside.

Villa Valmarana ai Nani and Tiepolo

A short walk from La Rotonda, Villa Valmarana ai Nani owes its curious name to the stone statues of dwarves (nani) that decorate the garden's boundary wall, tied to a local legend. The villa's main draw, however, lies in the frescoes painted in 1757 by Giambattista Tiepolo, the greatest decorator of eighteenth-century Venice, together with his son Giandomenico. In the Palazzina, Giambattista painted scenes drawn from the great epic poems - the Iliad, the Aeneid, Jerusalem Delivered and Orlando Furioso - with his usual chromatic brilliance and theatrical sense of movement; in the Foresteria, Giandomenico instead created scenes of everyday life and more intimate, narrative 'chinoiserie'. The contrast between the two styles, father and son, makes the visit a fascinating comparison of two different approaches to decorative painting.

The Sanctuary of Monte Berico

Overlooking the city from the top of the hill that bears its name, the Sanctuary of Monte Berico has been a pilgrimage destination since the fourteenth century, when the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a peasant woman, promising the end of a plague. The current basilica, built in Baroque style, houses important works of art such as Paolo Veronese's Supper of Saint Gregory the Great and a copy of the Pietà sculpted by Orazio Marinali. The square in front offers one of the finest views over Vicenza and the surrounding Venetian plain, with the Pre-Alps visible in the background on clear days. Visitors can climb on foot along the long eighteenth-century portico that starts from the city centre, a shaded route of about 700 metres marked by votive chapels, or reach the top by car or bus.

Vicenza's Goldsmithing Tradition

Vicenza is, together with Arezzo and Valenza, one of Italy's leading goldsmithing districts and among the most important in the world for gold jewellery production. The tradition, rooted in centuries of local craftsmanship, developed an industrial and export vocation in the twentieth century that made the Vicenza area a global point of reference for the sector. Every year the city hosts Vicenzaoro, one of the most important international jewellery trade fairs in the world, attracting buyers and enthusiasts from every continent to the Vicenza Fair. The historic centre is home to historic goldsmith workshops and specialised shops where visitors can admire artisan craftsmanship, while several city museums recount the history of this centuries-old vocation that intertwines art, trade and manufacturing.

Baccalà and the Flavours of Vicenza

Vicenza's cuisine finds its signature dish in baccalà alla vicentina: despite the name, it is made with dried stockfish (not salted cod), slowly cooked with milk, oil, anchovies, onion and grana cheese until it reaches a creamy consistency, traditionally served with white or yellow polenta. The dish is protected by a code of practice upheld by the Venerabile Confraternita del Baccalà alla Vicentina, founded right here in the city. Alongside this symbol, Vicenza's table also offers risi e bisi (rice and peas), the white asparagus of Bassano in springtime, mountain-pasture cheeses and wines from the nearby Colli Berici and Valpolicella. Historic osterie and wine bars in the historic centre let visitors sample these dishes paired with a good glass of local wine, a convivial ritual deeply felt throughout the Veneto.

How to Visit

Vicenza is easily explored on foot: the historic centre is compact, and its main attractions, from Piazza dei Signori to the Teatro Olimpico, are just a few minutes' walk from one another. The railway station, on the Milan-Venice line, is a short distance from the centre, making the city easy to reach on a day trip from Venice, Padua and Verona. To reach Villa La Rotonda and Villa Valmarana ai Nani, located on the hills to the south, visitors can walk (about 30-40 minutes from the centre) or take a city bus; the same applies to the climb to the Sanctuary of Monte Berico. Spring and early autumn offer the most favourable weather for walking, while January is the month of Vicenzaoro, when the city comes alive with international visitors linked to the goldsmithing industry.
