In the Asolo hills
San Zenone degli Ezzelini occupies a stretch of the Asolo hills, the hilly band separating the Treviso plain from the first pre-Alpine foothills. The municipal territory alternates vine-covered rises with small settlements, in a landscape sharing the geographic and agricultural character of nearby Asolo, while retaining a more modest, less touristic scale.
The Castellaro of the Ezzelini
On Colle Castellaro, the imposing foundations, fourteen by four metres, of the impregnable castle of the da Romano family, better known as the Ezzelini, have come to light. It was here, on 26 August 1260, that the family's story ended with the death of Ezzelino II. The town's very name, San Zenone degli Ezzelini, recalls this historical link to one of the most feared families of the medieval Veneto.
Villa Marini Rubelli
In the hamlet of Sopracastello stands Villa Marini Rubelli, whose oldest core dates to the sixteenth century or perhaps earlier. From the seventeenth century it served as the country residence of the Venetian nobleman Teodoro Senachi and his wife Quieta Marini; in the mid-nineteenth century it passed to Francesco Rubelli and, after the First World War, to the parish of San Zenone. Purchased by the municipality in 1988, the villa has been under restoration since 2009. The complex includes the main house, partly frescoed with late-seventeenth-century scenes, a barchessa, a chapel dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine, a walled courtyard and an old garden.
Close to Asolo and Possagno
San Zenone degli Ezzelini borders the territory of Asolo, known for its historic centre and scenic views, and is not far from Possagno, birthplace of sculptor Antonio Canova and home to the Tempio Canoviano and the Gypsotheca, which belong, however, to the municipality of Possagno. San Zenone offers instead a quieter base for visiting this hilly area, without overlapping the major attractions of its neighbours.
A landscape of vineyards and hills
The municipal territory retains a strong agricultural character, with vineyards spreading across the hillsides and small rural hamlets. It is a landscape typical of the Asolo area, complementing the zone's more visited destinations and offering country roads suited to walking and cycling.
