San Vendemiano lies in the Treviso plain, just outside Conegliano and the first hills of the Prosecco area, in a territory that combines farming, winegrowing and a solid manufacturing tradition. The town has no grand monumental old centre, but its history is an ancient one: the territory was shaped by Roman centuriation and, after the fall of the empire, for centuries followed the fortunes of Conegliano, sharing its passage under Lombard and then Frankish rule, and later the long era of the Republic of Venice. Today San Vendemiano is above all a productive town, crossed by the Pontebbana state road and marked by a dense industrial and commercial zone, yet part of its hillier territory also falls within the production area of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco, offering a more rural and scenic side to those who take the time to look. It is, in short, a town of two faces: the working world along the state road, and the quieter one of the vine-covered hills toward Conegliano.

The story

The story of San Vendemiano

History and origins

The territory of San Vendemiano was shaped by Roman centuriation, the geometric division of fields still visible today across much of the Veneto plain. After the fall of the Roman Empire it came under Lombard rule and, once the Lombards were defeated by the Franks in 774, became part of the fief of the count-bishop of Ceneda. From that point San Vendemiano's history closely followed that of Conegliano, both coming under the rule of Treviso from 1170. In 1339 the territory became part of the Republic of Venice, where it remained until the fall of the Republic in 1797, a period of stable peace that favoured the local community's prosperity. The municipality of San Vendemiano was formally established by a decree of the Austrian government on 4 April 1816, and its boundaries have remained unchanged since.

Prosecco country

The hillier part of San Vendemiano falls within the production area of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco, alongside the towns of Conegliano, Colle Umberto, Vittorio Veneto and other nearby centres. It is not the most celebrated core of the denomination, the stretch between Valdobbiadene and the UNESCO World Heritage hills, but a fringe territory that nonetheless shares the same winegrowing tradition and the same landscape of terraced vineyards that characterizes this part of the Treviso province.

Local life and economy

San Vendemiano today is a town with a strong manufacturing and commercial character, crossed by the Pontebbana state road, one of the province's busiest traffic corridors, along which numerous industrial and craft businesses have developed over the years, including a number involved in woodworking and furniture making, a sector of historic importance in the Treviso area. Alongside the industrial zone sits a growing residential fabric, encouraged by the proximity to Conegliano.

Getting there

San Vendemiano lies along the Pontebbana state road, just minutes from Conegliano, and is well connected to Treviso, about thirty kilometres away, both by road and via the nearby Conegliano railway station, a key transport hub for the whole area.
