The story of Piombino Dese
History and origins
The history of Piombino Dese is inseparable from Villa Cornaro, commissioned around 1552 by Giorgio Cornaro, who had acquired the land the previous year following an inheritance division. Construction proceeded quickly: by March 1553 work was already underway, and by April 1554 the villa, though still incomplete, was habitable. Andrea Palladio considered it among his finest achievements, describing it in the second of his Four Books of Architecture, the treatise that would spread his models across Europe and, later, overseas.
What to see and main sights
Villa Cornaro is the municipality's main attraction: the facade features a projecting loggia with two tiers of six columns, Ionic on the lower floor and Corinthian on the piano nobile, topped by a triangular pediment with a small oculus. Inside, the building preserves one hundred and four eighteenth-century frescoes by the Rovigo painter Mattia Bortoloni, decorating the ground floor with scenes from the Old Testament and the piano nobile with scenes from the New Testament. The villa, reopened to the public after a long restoration, today also hosts cultural and food and wine events promoting the local area.
