Piombino Dese lies in the Alta Padovana, between Padua and Treviso, and is known above all for Villa Cornaro, one of Andrea Palladio's absolute masterpieces and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto. Designed from 1552 for Giorgio Cornaro, the villa was already habitable by 1554, though still unfinished, and Palladio himself illustrated it in the second of his Four Books of Architecture. Its facade, with a two-tier loggia of Ionic and Corinthian columns and a triangular pediment, became a reference model for neo-Palladian architecture, influencing, according to several scholars, residential buildings in the United States. Around the villa, reopened to the public after a long restoration, stretches the quiet farmland typical of the Alta Padovana, completing the picture of a municipality of great historical and artistic value.

The story

The story of Piombino Dese

History and origins

The history of Piombino Dese is inseparable from Villa Cornaro, commissioned around 1552 by Giorgio Cornaro, who had acquired the land the previous year following an inheritance division. Construction proceeded quickly: by March 1553 work was already underway, and by April 1554 the villa, though still incomplete, was habitable. Andrea Palladio considered it among his finest achievements, describing it in the second of his Four Books of Architecture, the treatise that would spread his models across Europe and, later, overseas.

What to see and main sights

Villa Cornaro is the municipality's main attraction: the facade features a projecting loggia with two tiers of six columns, Ionic on the lower floor and Corinthian on the piano nobile, topped by a triangular pediment with a small oculus. Inside, the building preserves one hundred and four eighteenth-century frescoes by the Rovigo painter Mattia Bortoloni, decorating the ground floor with scenes from the Old Testament and the piano nobile with scenes from the New Testament. The villa, reopened to the public after a long restoration, today also hosts cultural and food and wine events promoting the local area.

Nature and surroundings

Around Villa Cornaro stretches the countryside of the Alta Padovana, a lowland agricultural landscape dotted with minor waterways and small rural settlements. It is a territory suited to slow cycling itineraries, linking Piombino Dese to other villas in the area on a route exploring the Palladian architecture scattered across the Venetian countryside.

Food, wine and local produce

The agriculture of the Alta Padovana supplies grain, vegetables and dairy products grown and raised on local farms, underpinning a simple local cuisine rooted in Venetian farming tradition. The events periodically held at Villa Cornaro, combining culture with local produce, offer a chance to experience this food tradition first-hand.

Events and traditions

Villa Cornaro hosts cultural initiatives, concerts and events that combine a visit to the monument with the discovery of local produce, strengthening the bond between the Palladian heritage and the community of Piombino Dese. Alongside these events, village life is marked by traditional parish festivals.

How to get there and location

Piombino Dese lies in the Alta Padovana, halfway between Padua and Treviso, in a convenient position for those wishing to combine a visit to the municipality with a broader itinerary among the area's Venetian villas. The territory is served by the provincial roads connecting the towns of the Alta Padovana to both provincial capitals.

Local life and economy

Piombino Dese's economy combines agriculture, small and medium industry, and cultural tourism linked to Villa Cornaro, which has gained renewed visibility in recent years thanks to its restoration and reopening to the public. It is a balance typical of the towns of the Alta Padovana, where a productive vocation coexists with heritage of international importance.
