History and origins
The name of Limena first appears in a document from 918, drawn up under Emperor Berengar I, evidence of an already established settlement in the early Middle Ages. The etymology linked to the Latin limen, meaning threshold or boundary, suggests that this territory was seen from an early period as a transitional zone between different areas, a role that would become even more significant with the later construction of major hydraulic works.
The Brentella canal and water engineering
Limena took on particular strategic importance after the construction of the Brentella canal, dug in 1314 to channel water from the Brenta river into the Bacchiglione and on to Padua. The work guaranteed the city's water supply even during periods when rival Vicenza diverted the Bacchiglione's waters amid conflicts between the two cities. Along the canal, the so-called colmelloni are still visible, historic structures built to regulate the water, tangible evidence of a hydraulic engineering tradition that shaped the area for centuries.
What to see
Limena's historic centre gathers around an orderly square, overlooked by the church of San Giovanni Battista. The municipal territory is also home to Limena castle and Villa Pisani, evidence of the area's past defensive and noble architecture, as well as a building known locally as the Locanda, among the oldest in the town. This is not a grand monumental heritage, but a set of places that tell the local history with modesty and measure.
