Giavera del Montello lies on the northern slope of the Montello, the wooded hill overlooking the Piave river, in the province of Treviso. The area is inseparably tied to the history of the First World War: hard fighting took place on the Montello in 1917 and 1918, and the municipality is home to the Giavera British Military Cemetery, which holds the graves of Commonwealth soldiers who fell in the Battle of the Piave. Beyond this wartime memory, the Montello is today a natural area of great value, covered in coppice woodland and crossed by a dense network of paths and cycle routes, including the ring route that circles the hill entirely. The hilly landscape also opens onto the vineyards of the Montello e Colli Asolani denomination. Giavera del Montello thus offers a combination of history, nature and rural landscape just a few kilometres from the Piave.

The story

The story of Giavera del Montello

The Montello, a hill shaped by history and nature

The Montello is an isolated hill that stretches along the right bank of the Piave, largely covered in coppice woodland once managed as a timber reserve for the Venice Arsenal. Its position, dominating the plain and the river, made it a strategic site for centuries, a role that culminated in its front-line function during the First World War.

The British Military Cemetery

The territory of Giavera del Montello is home to the Giavera British Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which holds the graves of British and other Commonwealth soldiers who fell during the fighting on the Piave in 1918. Sober and well kept, the cemetery is a place of remembrance for those retracing the First World War sites on the Montello.

The trails and the Montello ring route

The Montello is crossed by a network of trails and unpaved roads much frequented by hikers and cyclists, including the well-known Anello del Montello, a route that circles the hill entirely through woods, clearings and viewpoints over the Treviso plain and the Piave.

The vineyards of Montello e Colli Asolani

The slopes of the Montello fall within the production zone of the Montello e Colli Asolani denomination, which includes red and white wines grown on the hillside soils near the Piave. Viticulture exists alongside forest management as the main activity tied to the hilly territory.

Giavera and the memory of the Piave

The connection between Giavera del Montello and the Piave river goes beyond wartime events: the waterway has shaped the boundaries, economies and communications of the area for centuries. Several historical and nature trails still link the municipality to the riverbanks and to other First World War memorial sites along the Piave.
