The story of Dueville
History and origins
Dueville's territory formed on an alluvial cone rich in underground water, a condition that shaped its agricultural vocation and the widespread presence of risorgive since ancient times. Besides the main town, the municipality includes the hamlets of Povolaro, Passo di Riva and Vivaro, the latter home to an ancient parish. Like much of the Vicenza plain, the area was shaped by patrician families who built country villas here, most notably that of the Da Porto family in Vivaro, built in 1554 for Count Paolo Porto, a canon of Vicenza's cathedral.

In the hamlet of Vivaro stands Villa Porto, today Villa Pedrotti, a building with a central Ionic portico topped by a triangular pediment bearing the Da Porto family coat of arms. Its attribution to Andrea Palladio is disputed among architectural historians, but the villa is nonetheless included in the UNESCO site of the Palladian villas of the Veneto. The side wings are nineteenth-century additions by the architect Caregaro Negrin. The villa is surrounded by a romantic park with centuries-old trees, a small hill and a pond, while a straight avenue leads to the church of Vivaro and a small oratory dedicated to San Gaetano Thiene.
Nature: the springs and the Bosco di Dueville
The Bosco di Dueville is the best-preserved natural environment in the municipality, a protected area of great value that retains the original character of this stretch of plain. Within it are small depressions where spring water flows perennially at a constant temperature between ten and thirteen degrees, giving rise to rich aquatic and riparian vegetation, home to grey herons and little egrets. It is a rare place on the Veneto plain, where intensive farming and an intact natural environment coexist closely.
Local life and economy
Dueville maintains a mixed economy, spanning plains agriculture, small and medium enterprise, and services linked to its closeness to Vicenza, a ten-minute drive away. The quality of the spring water has historically also favoured fish farming and sport fishing, alongside the area's traditional irrigated agriculture.
How to get there and location
Dueville lies about ten kilometres north of Vicenza, along the road leading to the Asiago plateau, and is served by its own railway station on the Vicenza-Schio line. Its location makes it a good stopping point for those travelling between the Palladian city and the foothill areas of the Vicenza province.
