Due Carrare is a municipality in the Bassa Padovana on the edge of the Euganean Hills, formed in the 1970s from the merger of Carrara San Giorgio and Carrara Santo Stefano. It is one of the few municipalities in this part of the plain to offer a genuinely significant historical attraction: the Castle of San Pelagio, home to the Air Museum and keeper of the memory of Gabriele D'Annunzio's 1918 flight over Vienna, which departed from here. Alongside it stands the Abbey of Santo Stefano di Carrara, evidence of the Benedictine monastic presence in the area. For the rest, the territory retains an agricultural and residential character typical of the Bassa Padovana, with cultivated fields and small rural settlements stretching out at the foot of the Euganean Hills. The combination of a castle with such a distinctive aviation history and a medieval abbey makes Due Carrare a surprisingly rich cultural stop for a municipality of modest size.

The story

The story of Due Carrare

History and origins

The present-day municipality was formed by merging Carrara San Giorgio and Carrara Santo Stefano, two distinct centres that share the toponym Carrara, historically linked to the Da Carrara family, lords of Padua in the Middle Ages. The Abbey of Santo Stefano, of Benedictine foundation, testifies to the religious and agricultural importance the area already held in medieval times, when monks contributed to draining and cultivating the surrounding land.

What to see

The Castle of San Pelagio is the heart of the municipality's cultural offering: inside, the Air Museum tells the story of Italian aviation, and in particular the feat of Gabriele D'Annunzio, who set off from here in 1918 for his famous flight over Vienna. The Abbey of Santo Stefano di Carrara, with its Benedictine origins, is the other pole of historical and religious interest in the area, while the centre retains a rural fabric of churches and farm courtyards typical of the Bassa Padovana.

Nature and surroundings

The territory lies on the southern edge of the Euganean Hills, offering a transitional landscape between the volcanic hills and the cultivated plain. Nearby, the trails of the Euganean Hills Regional Park open up, while the countryside around Due Carrare lends itself to walking and cycling among canals and farmland.

Food, wine and local products

Proximity to the Euganean Hills brings a quality winemaking tradition, with wines produced on the surrounding hills, while the plain offers vegetables and cereals typical of the Bassa Padovana. Local cuisine thus combines hillside flavours with those of the countryside, in an offering that also includes produce from the area's farm inns.

Events and traditions

The Castle of San Pelagio periodically hosts cultural initiatives and events linked to aviation history and the figure of D'Annunzio, which represent the municipality's moments of greatest tourist visibility. Alongside these are the traditional parish fairs of the two historic hamlets, San Giorgio and Santo Stefano.

How to get there and location

Due Carrare is located in the province of Padua, a short distance from the provincial capital and the Euganean Hills, easily reached by car via the road network of the Bassa Padovana. The nearest railway station is Padua, from where the journey continues by road south towards the Euganean Hills.

Local life and economy

The local economy combines agriculture, particularly viticulture on the hillside slopes, with cultural tourism linked to the Castle of San Pelagio, which represents the municipality's main draw. Otherwise, Due Carrare retains a residential and rural identity, with village life shaped by the rhythms of the two historic communities that make it up.
