Altivole is a municipality in the Treviso plain, situated in the Asolo area, a short distance from Asolo. It is known above all for the Barco della Regina Cornaro, the residence built at the end of the fifteenth century for Caterina Cornaro, the Venetian noblewoman who had been queen of Cyprus and who, after ceding the island to the Republic of Venice, received the lordship of Asolo in return. The Barco, today largely reduced compared to its original extent, retains parts of the ancient complex, including the barchessa and remains of the perimeter walls, and can be visited as a testimony to one of the best-known chapters of the Renaissance history of the Treviso area. The municipal territory also includes the hamlet of San Vito, set within the Asolo countryside. Altivole retains a largely agricultural character, with a landscape of crops interspersed with small settlements.

The story

The story of Altivole

In the Asolo plain

The territory of Altivole extends across the Treviso plain, a short distance from the hill of Asolo, in an area that has kept a strong link over the centuries with the nearby town and its Renaissance history. The landscape is that of cultivated countryside, dotted with small centres and minor waterways.

The Barco della Regina Cornaro

The Barco was built at the end of the fifteenth century as the country residence of Queen Caterina Cornaro. Of the vast original complex, which included perimeter walls and several buildings, mainly the barchessa and some accessory structures survive today, while much of the area has over time been transformed or absorbed into later building.

Caterina Cornaro, queen of Cyprus

Caterina Cornaro, a member of one of the most prominent families of the Venetian nobility, had become queen of Cyprus through her marriage to King James II of Lusignan. After the deaths of her husband and son, she ceded the island to the Republic of Venice and received the lordship of Asolo in return, where she spent part of her life, also frequenting the residence of Altivole.

San Vito and the countryside

The hamlet of San Vito lies in the Asolo countryside, in a rural setting consistent with the rest of the municipal territory. The settlement retains an agricultural character, with farms dedicated to field cultivation that shape the surrounding landscape.
